Read a Japanese plate
Every real Japanese plate follows the same layout. Here is what each part means, so you can build yours like the real thing.

地名 Place name
The Transport Bureau office where the car is registered, written in kanji. 品川 (Shinagawa) is one of the offices that serve Tokyo.

分類番号 Class number
One to three digits for the vehicle class. A 3 up front means a larger passenger car, a 5 or 7 a compact one, which is why fans talk about 3-number and 5-number cars.

ひらがな Kana
One hiragana that shows how the car is used. Most mean a private car; あ い う え か き く け こ を mean business use and わ or れ a rental. お し へ ん are never used.

一連指定番号 Serial number
Up to four digits with a hyphen after the first two, like 12-34. Shorter numbers are padded with dots, like ・・12. Owners in Japan can ask for a number they like.

Plate or magnetic cover?
The vanity plate is a display plate with two holes for U.S. mounting points, no adapter needed. The magnetic cover snaps over your plate at the meet and comes off before you drive.
How do magnetic plates work?
Magnets on the back of the aluminum cover attach to your existing plate hardware. No extra installation, easy on and off.
Are vanity plates made for JDM mounts?
Vanity plates come with two holes made for US plates, no adapter needed. All plates are made flat.
Is it a real Japanese registration plate?
No. It is a decorative show plate styled after the Japanese format, for display, shows and photos. It is not a valid registration plate in Japan, the U.S. or anywhere else. Read the full disclaimer.
Will it fit a U.S. car?

Can I use AI art?
Yes, and it is free. In the Style step, Create a JDM background with AI makes two JDM-style backgrounds from a theme like Mt. Fuji or Neon Tokyo night, up to 5 tries per visit. Your number, city and kana stay in the real plate font.
Do you make motorcycle plates?
Yes. Choose Motorcycle in the Plate step for a 7 × 4 in plate, as a vanity plate with two mounting holes or as a magnetic cover. Matching frames are car size only for now.
